HOST VO

What do this dog and a reindeer have in common?  Why is this dog’s howl compared to church bells?  Is this the most popular hunting dog in Germany?  Does this dog use its ears to smell?  Was this the favorite breed of The Brady BunchDogs 101 celebrates man’s best friend.  Today, the Swedish Lapphund, the Bluetick Coonhound, the German Wirehaired Pointer, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen, the Bearded Collie, and we start with the dog that could have inspired Star Wars’ Ewoks,

HOST VO

…the Brussels Griffon.

HOST VO

They co-starred with Jack Nicholson in As Good As It Gets, and have been featured in movies like The First Wives Club and Gosford Park.

HOST VO

This perky pooch may be petite, but don’t be fooled.  The Brussels Griffon has a plus sized personality.

DR. DEBBYE TURNER BELL VO/OC

They are so expressive they’re considered to have a human face.

MALE VOICE #1 VO

Eddie, Eddie, Eddie.

MUSIC OUT

HOST VO

Usually weighing between eight and ten pounds, these toy dogs had humble beginning.

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

It all started in Brussels, Belgium, in the 1800s where they held a less than glamorous job.

DR. KAREN HALLIGAN VO

They actually…

DR. KAREN HALLIGAN OC

…were used to catch rats out in…

DR. KAREN HALLIGAN VO

…the stables.

MUSIC SEGUE

HOST VO

The story is that over time, this energetic barn dog was likely crossed with a Black Pug, the King Charles Spaniel, the Ruby Toy Spaniel and the Affenpinscher.

MUSIC SEGUE

And by the end of the 19th Century, Belgian nobility had taken notice.

MUSIC OUT

HOST VO

Today, the Brussels Griffon is somewhat rare.

MUSIC IN

If you’re fortunate to come across this fun-loving creature, how will you know it’s a Brussels Griffon?

DR. NICHOLAS DODMAN VO/OC

The sort of very bristly, bushy face and a little pushed-in nose.

HOST VO

Brussels Griffons are brachycephalic, and their bodies are largely square and compact.  No beanpoles here.

DR. DEBBYE TURNER BELL VO/OC

They are small, but they’re not delicate.  This is a sturdy, alert…

MUSIC OUT

…dog.

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

They have two different types of coats, rough or smooth in four different colors, red, belge, black and tan or black.

LORENA LOPEZ OC

What a good boy.  That’s a good boy.

HOST VO

This red and rough-coated Brussels Griffon is named Diego.  He calls Los Angeles home and is the pride and joy of his mom, Lorena.

LORENA LOPEZ VO/OC

Diego has a great personality.  He all around just makes my life a happier…

MUSIC OUT

…life.

MUSIC IN

Rollover.  Good boy.

HOST VO

This cutie pie might look like the perfect pooch, but eight-year-old Diego didn’t always behave.

LORENA LOPEZ VO/OC

Diego has a few problems, one of them being anxiety.  He would bark out of control when I would leave him.

HOST VO

But that wasn’t all.  Diego and his mom both had…

MUSIC OUT

…a weight problem.

MUSIC IN

Two years ago, Lorena weighed over 200 pounds, and Diego was beginning to tip the scales, too.

LORENA LOPEZ VO/OC

Diego was a good 15-and-a-half pounds, and for a small dog, that’s a lot of weight.  Let’s do it, come on.

HOST VO

Knowing they had to make…

MUSIC OUT

…a change, Lorena and Diego got a move on it.

MUSIC IN

JILL BOWERS OC

Okay, ready, come on, everyone, jog it.

LORENA LOPEZ VO

Come on, Diego, go.

HOST VO

Most mornings you can find Lorena and her darling Diego at Thank Dog! Bootcamp,

HOST VO

MUSIC IN

Get set, ready, come on, run.

FEMALE VOICE #1 VO

Come on, Lucky.

HOST VO

The hour-long class in Burbank is part cardiovascular for people and dogs, with steady obedience training throughout.  Combining the two gives dogs an intense workout.

JILL BOWERS VO/OC

Mental stimulation and physical stimulation tires them out 20 times more than if you were to just let them run around.

MUSIC OUT

FEMALE IN BLACK SLACKS VO

He’s such a good boy.

HOST VO

One result is that Diego’s barking decreased substantially.

LORENA LOPEZ VO/OC

I think the anxiety was almost under control within the first two to three days.

JILL BOWERS VO

Let’s go.  Everybody on the bride.  We’re doing some pushups.

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

But shedding the pounds requires a bit more work, especially for the two-legged members.  While dog owners do calisthenics, their furry friends are trained to stay put and not socialize with other dogs.

JILL BOWERS VO/OC

When a dog is sitting and staying or laying and staying, they’re getting used to behaving in high distraction environments.  And pet your workout partner.  Tell them good job.

LORENA LOPEZ OC

Good job.

MUSIC OUT

JILL BOWERS OC

Okay, you started out at 200.

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

Class may be over, but today’s weigh-in is up next, and Lorena and Diego want to deliver the goods.  It’s been two years now since Diego and Lorena began attending Thank Dog! Bootcamp.  It’s time to find out…

MUSIC OUT

…how many pounds she has dropped since day one.

MUSIC IN

MUSIC OUT

JILL BOWERS OC

And now, we’re gonna weigh you to see how much you’ve lost.

MUSIC IN

MUSIC OUT

HOST VO

Lorena has dropped a whopping 60 pounds.

MUSIC IN

Lorena is really shedding the pounds.  Can Diego…

MUSIC OUT

…keep up?

MUSIC IN

LORENA LOPEZ VO

He had a, maybe about a pound-and-a-half or two pounds to go.  And I really hope that he’s made it.

MALE VOICE #2 VO

Come on, Diego.

JILL BOWERS OC/VO

He’s lost two pounds.

HOST VO

If you’re charmed by this diminutive Belgian dog, think it through before searching for one of your own.  Brussels Griffons are well-suited to apartment living, but still need daily walks to stay trim and burn excess…

MUSIC OUT

…energy.

MUSIC IN

In the health department, these little tykes are generally robust.  Some fall prey to an occasionally fatal congenital defect that causes cysts in the spinal cord.

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

When it comes to grooming, the smooth-coated Brussels Griffon needs weekly brushing, while the rough-coated variety usually requires professional hand-stripping to remove loose hair without pain.  Training requires some extra care too.

DR. KAREN HALLIGAN VO/OC

If you get one of these, you wanna start really early with the wee-wee pads and crate…

MUSIC OUT

…training.

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

Social and affectionate, the Brussels Griffon is a big-hearted companion that fits into almost any family.  Children under five may not be able to handle their tiny frames.

MUSIC SEGUE

HOST VO

To sum up, the Brussels Griffon is an adaptable dog that does well in an apartment or a home, as long as it gets regular exercise.  The breed’s health is generally good, and its grooming requirements are about average.  Housetraining can be tricky, but the Brussels Griffon is an excellent choice for families as long as young children are not too rough with them.

FEMALE VOICE #2 VO

HOST VO

It’s hard to resist the Bluetick Coonhound.

ANDREA ARDEN VO/OC

The first thing of when I think of a Bluetick Coonhound is goofy.

MUSIC OUT

DR. DEBBYE TURNER BELL OC

Bluetick…

MUSIC IN

…Coonhounds sort of have a dopey lovable look to their face.  They have long lips on a long muzzle and long, floppy ears and those droopy, dreamy eyes.

HOST VO

But don’t be fooled by their charming appearance because in reality.

DR. DEBBYE TURNER BELL VO/OC

They’re not clumsy by any stretch of the imagination.

MUSIC OUT

HOST VO

Neil Young’s song Old King is a tribute to his once-beloved Bluetick, Elvis.

HOST VO

And in the novel One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, a…

HOST VO

…a Bluetick Coonhound is used as a symbol for the character Chief Bromden.

DR. NICHOLAS DODMAN VO/OC

These Coonhounds are seen in Tennessee, in Mississippi, Louisiana.  That’s the big hunting area.

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

So, where does this hound come from?

HOST VO

The south, of course.  Believed to have originated in Louisiana, the Bluetick likely descended from the Grand Bleu De Gascogne and the English Foxhound.  The resulting dog was known as the English Coonhound, which came with either blue or red ticking

HOST VO

Hunters liked the Bluetick dogs for their ability to follow a cold trail and for their endurance.  They officially gave them the name Bluetick in honor of their appearance, and today, it’s a breed all its own.  The coon in Coonhound refers to the breed’s ability to track and tree raccoons.

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

DR. DEBBYE TURNER BELL VO/OC

Dogs can smell 100,000 times better than human beings.  I would put Bluetick Coonhounds at the top of the list.

HOST VO

The Bluetick is a cold-nose scent hound, which means they have the ability to track older scents that may have a weaker or cold trail.  So, what do Blueticks do when they pick up the scent of their prey?

DR. KAREN HALLIGAN VO/OC

All hound have a tendency to <howling>.

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

And each Bluetick is born with its own unique howl, allowing a hunter to recognize their dog from far away.

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

The best way to spot a Bluetick is the blue ticking.

ANDREA ARDEN VO/OC

Within the breed’s standard, the more ticking that a Bluetick Coonhound has, the more desirable.

HOST VO

The Bluetick has thin, long ears that reach the tip of its nose when pulled forward.

HOST VO

The hills of Tennessee are the perfect home for a Bluetick Hound.  That’s where Earl Hudson keeps his Bluetick, Smokey.

EARL HUDSON OC

Smokey is such a great pet because he’s a lover.

HOST VO

At home, this nine-year-old is comfy laying in the sun in Earl’s backyard.

EARL HUDSON OC/VO

Smokey has a wonderful life, and he has three dog houses.  He can sleep in his choice.

MUSIC OUT

HOST VO

But Smokey is not your typical couch potato because three weekends a month, Smokey lives a double life.  These two young men have come to pick up Smokey to take him to his second home.

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

It’s the campus of the University of Tennessee where Smokey reigns as one of the most famous college mascots.

MALE FOOTBALL PLAYER OC

Smokey’s more than a mascot.  He’s the pride…

FEMALE CHEERLEADER #1 OC

The University of Tennessee.

FEMALE CHEERLEADER #2 OC

FEMALE CHEERLEADER #2 OC

FEMALE CHEERLEADER #4 VO/OC

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

When there’s a game, Smokey’s new buds are Robert Moser and Trey McAdams of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity.  They’re responsible for the big dog on campus.

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

It’s their job to feed and house Smokey for his weekend responsibilities and make sure that he has access to his fans.

BOY IN FOOTBALL JERSEY OC

I love Smokey.

TREY MCADAMS VO

Smokey’s…

TREY MCADAMS

…like a brother to me, and he’ll be a lifelong friend.

ROBERT MOSER OC

I love Smokey because he’s my pet.  He’s my friend.

ROBERT MOSER VO

He’s like my brother.

MUSIC OUT

HOST VO

But it’s at the Tennessee Volunteer games where Smokey steals the show.

MALE FOOTBALL PLAYER VO/OC

When Smokey runs onto the field, the U-T fans know it’s game time.

MUSIC IN

MUSIC OUT

HOST VO

Smokey is the Vols biggest cheerleader.  When the home team scores, Smokey runs back and forth in the end zone and does what a good Bluetick Coonhound hound was bred for.

MUSIC IN

ROBERT MOSER VO/OC

Smokey sounds pretty loud…

MUSIC OUT

…at the games.  It’s low, and it’s kind of raspy, kind of like <howling>.

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

One of the fans…

MUSIC OUT

…who can recognize Smokey’s howl is his proud papa, Earl, who’s always in the stands.

MUSIC IN

EARL HUDSON VO/OC

I am so proud on Smokey.  He…

MUSIC OUT

…gives me incredible pride.

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

After the game, what does any self-respecting college student do?  Go to a frat party, of course, and that’s where you’ll find Smokey hanging out by the food and helping his buddies make connections.

TREY MCADAMS VO/OC

I would say Smokey does help with my social life.  I’m single, so he definitely helps a little bit with the ladies.  Hey, Smokey.

HOST VO

And when the party’s over, it’s time to crash in the dorm.

ROBERT MOSER VO/OC

After the game, Smokey is exhausted.  He gets on the couch and stays there all night.

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

Monday morning, it’s off to classes for Robert and Trey, and for Smokey, it’s back home to Earl.  Another win for the Volunteers and another weekend at school for Smokey.

EARL HUDSON OC

Way to go.  Way to go, Smokey.

MUSIC OUT

Good job, good.

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

Not all Blueticks in live in the city and the country, but this breed would prefer a large open fenced-in space.

DR. KAREN HALLIGAN VO/OC

Definitely not an apartment dog.  You would have the police coming over, I think, a lot.

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

They’re generally healthy, but some dogs develop cataracts and hip dysplasia.  The Bluetick’s short, glossy coat is very low maintenance, and as far as training, Blueticks are smart yet easily distracted by their nose.  Athletic, loud and determined, Blueticks are working dogs that need an active loving family.

MUSIC OUT

FEMALE IN GREEN BLOUSE OC

Yeah.

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

In general, the Bluetick is best suited to live in a place with space.  They are pretty healthy but can have some problems, such as cataracts and hip dysplasia.  Maintaining their coat requires minimal care, yet training sometimes requires a little extra T-L-C, and overall, the Bluetick can be a great pet and worker that loves to be part of an active family.

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

Meet the Swedish Lapphund.

HOST VO

The dog with the world’s friendliest bark.

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

Well, at least if you’re a reindeer.

HOST VO

The Lapp is actually for Lapland, or the northern extremes of Sweden, Finland and Norway where…

HOST VO

…the nomadic Sami people put Swedish Lapphunds to work herding reindeer.

MUSIC SEGUE

HOST VO

Archaeologists recently unearthed a 7,000 year old Lappy skeleton in Norway.

DR. KAREN HALLIGAN VO/OC

The Swedish Lapphund is probably one of the oldest breeds of dogs.

HOST VO

And they’re very rare.

ANDREA ARDEN VO/OC

There’s probably only about I would say five to ten of them in America right now.

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

Swedish Lapphunds are part of the Spitz family, along with Akitas, Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskies.

HOST VO

All these dogs have a wolf-y look, with pointed ears and long muzzles.

DR. KAREN HALLIGAN VO

Like many other Spitz-like dogs, they were generally developed in areas of the world that are very cold.

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

A long, thick, double-layered coat protects Lappies from northern exposure.  Coat color is always sheer black or brown, though sometimes a white patch appears on the chest.

DR. KAREN HALLIGAN VO/OC

They actually bred them to have the black or brown bear coat coloring so it would stand out against the snow.

HOST VO

The Swedish Lapphund’s compact square body stands slightly under medium sized.

DR. NICHOLAS DODMAN OC

A real dog of a dog.

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

This breed has also developed a trait that sets it apart as a reindeer herder, a special high-pitched bark.  It generates the sound by pushing air through the diaphragm like a syringe plunger and constricting the throat and vocal cords while exhaling to create the right pitch.

MUSIC SEGUE

HOST VO

The result is a bark that encourages the reindeer to move, while also saying that the dog is not a predator.

ANDREA ARDEN VO

I would suspect that part of that is due to the fact that the…

ANDREA ARDEN OC

…reindeer are growing up with the Swedish Lapphunds from when they’re little baby reindeer, get more accustomed to the dogs and vice versa.

HOST VO

They may have solid reindeer-herding credentials, but it’s the Swedish Lapphund’s huge heart that’s renewing

MUSIC OUT

…interest in the breed.

HOST VO

Just ask Anna-Mari Kostianus…

MUSIC IN

…who lives in northern Finland with her three Lapphunds.

ANNA-MARI KOSTIANUS VO/OC

I love Swedish Lapphunds because they are so social.  They are, they are like teddy bears.

HOST VO

Teddy bears who tear around her property herding reindeer.

ANNA-MARI KOSTIANUS VO/OC

It was quite interesting to see how they work.

HOST VO

Anna-Mari came across the Swedish Lapphund during one of the darkest periods…

MUSIC OUT

…of her life.

MUSIC IN

After a messy divorce, Anna-Mari hit rock bottom, but they say a dog is the best cure for a broken heart.

ANNA-MARI KOSTIANUS OC/VO

I decided to fulfill one of my dreams.  I decided to take a dog, and this is when I met my dog, Mimi.

HOST VO

Now, Anna-Mari wants to repay her dogs for everything they have done for her.

ANNA-MARI KOSTIANUS VO/OC

I wanted to give something back to these dogs.

MUSIC SEGUE

I wanted to let them do their natural work.

HOST VO

Mimi and Anna-Mari now share their own passion for reindeer herding, a job that exercises Mimi’s natural instincts and inspires Anna-Mari.

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

Mimi’s task?  Herd together a group of reindeer.  Anna-Mari gives Mimi some last minute encouragement.

ANNA-MARI KOSTIANUS VO

<Speaks in Finnish>.

HOST VO

Then, she’s off.  Mimi combines her agility and speed with the unique Lappy vocalization to draw the reindeer out of their woods and towards a smaller pen.

ANNA-MARI KOSTIANUS VO

They have this certain bark.  Otherwise, the reindeer might think it’s a wolf.

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

Mimi shows the instincts of Swedish Lapphunds are as strong as ever, and for Anna-Mari, this is a way to strengthen the bond the Lappies have with their people.

ANNA-MARI KOSTIANUS VO/OC

They are very caring and loving dogs.  I love them.  <Speaking in Finnish>.

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

From chasing reindeer in the cold to warming our hearts, this is a dog that loves to please, but bring a Swedish Lapphund into a home with a big yard and a temperate climate.

ANDREA ARDEN VO/OC

They have a very dense coat, and that means they might not be the best dogs for a very warm climate, let’s say, Miami.

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

This breed is relatively healthy, but watch out for retinal atrophy.

DR. NICHOLAS DODMAN VO/OC

It’s an eye disorder which leads to vision loss.

HOST VO

That long coat requires some time-consuming regular grooming, especially when it sheds.  Like all Spitz-type dogs, Lappies enjoy work, but an independent spirit means they like to figure things out for themselves and may challenge trainers.  The Lappy is gaining a great reputation as a wonderful family dog in its native Scandinavia.

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

So, in general, the Swedish Lapphund needs space and won’t do well in a hot climate.  They’re generally healthy but prone to retinal atrophy.  The Lappy’s long coat must be brushed out regularly.  It’s a highly trainable dog but likes to work independently, and it’s becoming known more and more as a wonderful family dog.

DR. DEBBYE TURNER BELL OC

…nickname, P-B-G-V.

DR. NICHOLAS DODMAN OC

I can’t, can’t say that.  I don’t why because I keep saying heebee-jeebie.

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

No worries.  Some just simply call them.

DR. KAREN HALLIGAN OC/VO

The Petites is what we call them in the United States because their name is such a mouthful.

DR. NICHOLAS DODMAN OC/VO

Petite means small.  Basset means near to the ground.  Griffon means curly, wiry coat and…

DR. NICHOLAS DODMAN VO

…Vendeén means from the Vendeé area.

ANDREA ARDEN OC

Cuteness times ten.

They’re delicious.

MUSIC IN

Mary Tyler Moore had two, and King Louis VII had several throughout his life.

HOST VO

Back then, they were called Chiens Blancs du Roi, or the King’s White Hounds.

DR. NICHOLAS DODMAN VO/OC

It is said as a rule of thumb that they’re actually twice as long as they are tall.

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

DR. DEBBYE TURNER BELL VO

This is a bright, alert dog that has a lot of energy.

HOST VO

Another fun nickname they’re called is the Happy Breed.

MUSIC OUT

HOST VO

The P-B-G-V is an ancient French dog…

MUSIC IN

…that dates way back to the 16th Century.

DR. NICHOLAS DODMAN OC

It was derived from the…

DR. NICHOLAS DODMAN VO

…Basset Vendeén, which is a larger relative.

HOST VO

This bold scent hound has proudly carried head that incorporates long eyebrows, a beard and mustache.

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

It’s the dog’s long, droopy ears that enhance its sniffing capability.  Those waving ears capture and direct scents by guiding odors and holding them close to the nose, making this dog a superb scent hound.

MUSIC OUT

And it’s strong, tapered tail shoots out like a sword.

DR. KAREN HALLIGAN OC

Always has its tail wagging, it’s bottom moving and ready for a good time anytime.

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

Charlotte and her husband, Ray, live here in Milwaukee where they have three loving P-B-G-Vs, Cindy Lou, Olivia and Inspector Clouseau, or Clue as they casually call him.

CHARLOTTE ALLMANN OC

When I found out that P-B-G-Vs were the detectives of the dog world, I chose the name Inspector Clouseau.  We have three P-B-G-Vs, and we found that’s impossible to have just one and be fully entertained in life.  Good puppies.

HOST VO

But these low to the ground fluff-balls aren’t just kissing fools.  They do serious work.

HOST VO

Charlotte’s hounds are certified search and rescue dogs, and they are sometimes used to help crack unsolved police cases.

CHARLOTTE ALLMANN VO

They love it.  They absolutely love it.  We have what are called lifeline dogs.  The lifeline dogs are tracking and trailing dogs.

HOST VO

Charlotte, like most good P-B-G-V mommies, knew that her dogs needed to be active.  So, she enrolled Clue…

HOST VO

…in a search and rescue class.

MUSIC OUT

CHARLOTTE ALLMANN VO

He absolutely went…

CHARLOTTE ALLMANN OC

…crazy for the finding the scent.  He thought it was the greatest thing in the world.

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

Then Charlotte, along with a few friends, got their other babies involved.

CHARLOTTE ALLMANN VO

They sincerely love people, and I think that’s one of the reasons that they’re…

CHARLOTTE ALLMANN VO

…very successful in searching for missing people is that they have a natural drive to find…

MUSIC OUT

…their best friends.

MUSIC IN

CHARLOTTE ALLMANN. VO

They’re very talented.  They have what’s called a cold nose.  They are…

MUSIC OUT

…able to follow very, very weak scent for quite some time.

MUSIC IN

JEANNE FROST OC

Good girl, Syl.  Well, the P-B-G-Vs is kind of a natural tracker.

MUSIC OUT

JEANNE FROST OC

Favorite thing on Earth.

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

In this training session, the dogs are honing their skills, and it all starts with a scent article.

JEANNE FROST OC

The gloves again have my scent on them.  Leave a little scent pad, and we’re off.  Once they smell the article, they get that scent in their olfactory system, and they know when they’re asked, “This is what I need to search for and search for until I find it.”

HOST VO

Then, it’s up to the owners to properly read what the dogs are thinking through their body language.

CHARLOTTE ALLMANN VO

Yes, let’s go find her.  If their head is down, their nose is to the ground.  Their ears are usually forward.  Their tail is in a straight line with their spine.  Generally, that’s great tracking behavior in this breed.

MUSIC OUT

JEANNE FROST VO

Yes.

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

And these P-B-G-Vs have had incredible people-tracking results…

MUSIC OUT

…like the…

HOST VO

…case of a 14-year-old boy who went missing.

MUSIC IN

CHARLOTTE ALLMANN OC/VO

He was missing for about two-and-a-half days.  So, we took Cindy Lou down to the neighbor’s farm.

HOST VO

Cindy Lou’s incredible nose sniffed the missing boy’s scent through the woods to the highway and then signaled to Charlotte that the boy’s track was gone.  Investigators used the dog’s reaction to the loss of scent to determine that the boy had been picked up and was no longer in the area.  Three days later and 180 miles away, there was a happy ending.  The boy was found…

MUSIC OUT

…safe and sound.

MUSIC IN

CHARLOTTE ALLMANN VO

There are a lot of people that think we’re angels for going out there and finding their missing person.  It’s the dogs, though, that are the stars.  We couldn’t do it without them.

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

P-B-G-Vs can pretty much live anywhere, but be careful because they love to make noise.

DR. KAREN HALLIGAN VO/OC

They will bark and <howling> and howl and talk.

HOST VO

The P-B-G-V is a fairly healthy dog, but some breed lines may contain a terminal disease.

DR. KAREN HALLIGAN OC

Aseptic meningitis, which is an inflammation in the meninges and can be fatal.

MUSIC OUT

MUSIC IN

HOST VO

Their harsh wire coat needs regular brushing, and it should be hand-stripped occasionally to remove dead hair.

JOEY VILLANI VO/OC

If you don’t do this on a regular basis every six to eight weeks, they’re gonna shed like mad in your house.

HOST VO

A Milwaukee who almost froze to death in a blizzard owes his life to his dog.

TED MOSS OC

She’s very attached to me and about as attached as I am to her.

HOST VO

Ted Moss and Buddy were out in his truck one February day and got stuck in driving snow and zero visibility.  Unable to drive in the conditions, Ted and Buddy abandoned the truck on the deserted road and started walking.  After trudging for two horrific miles fighting sub-zero wind and snow, Ted was exhausted and collapsed in the snow.

TED MOSS VO

Yeah, I knew she wouldn’t leave my side.  That’s for sure.

HOST VO

That’s when Buddy went into action.  Miraculously, she raced to the house of Ted’s brother barking at his door until he followed her to the snow bank Ted was lying in.

TED MOSS BROTHER VO/OC

A man face-down like that.  Well, I thought I’d found a dead man.

TED MOSS OC

All my clothes are frozen to me.  They had to cut everything off.

HOST VO

Ted had a core body temperature of 68 degrees, 30 degrees below normal.  His heart completely stopped twice.

TED MOSS OC

Twice they said I flatlined.

In a coma for days, no one could wake him until Buddy was finally allowed in his room.

HOST VO

If you’re thinking you could fall for a face like this, you’d be right, but you’ll need lots of room.  The German Wirehaired Pointer is not an apartment dog.

DR. NICHOLAS DODMAN VO/OC

At least an hour or two of off-leash running every day.

HOST VO

And that wire hair, it does shed.  So, regular brushing with a firm bristle brush is a must.  These strong dogs tend to live long healthy lives of about 12 to 14 years, but they can suffer from hip dysplasia, ear infections, genetic eye diseases and skin cancer.

MUSIC SEGUE

Because they’re so smart, training is easy, but they’re not pushovers.

ANDREA ARDEN VO/OC

They tend to be a dog that, I would say, has a stronger, harder, more determined personality.

HOST VO

But with focus and consistency, they’ll always aim to please their owners.  If socialized early, German Wirehaired Pointers are great dogs for active families.

HOST VO

That’s just what Melissa and Jim Beck who live near Pittsburgh love about Bearded Collies.  After 11 years, their first Bearded, named Katie, developed liver cancer at age 11.

MELISSA BECK VO/OC

We knew it was time to put Katie down because she was in pain.

HOST VO

Heartbroken, the family swore Katie would be their last pet.

MELISSA BECK VO/OC

Well, I think when you have a pet that is such a part of your family, and they’re gone, you think that you can go on without it, but there’s just such an emptiness and a loneliness.  So, we lasted about two months before we said, “We have to get another one.”

MUSIC SEGUE

HOST VO

The Beck’s youngest son, Jordan, literally grew up with the family’s next Bearded Collie named Molly.  They were so close, Jordan even had Molly pose with him…

MUSIC IN

But then, six months ago, soon after Molly turned 12, the heartbreak started all over again.

JIM BECK VO/OC

Her eyes would tell you the story.  You know, as she would start to go up the steps, she would round the corner, and about the second or third step, her rear legs would just go out, and, and she would look at you with a, with a helpless look.

HOST VO

It seemed like overnight Molly was crippled by arthritis, a degenerative disease affecting the joints of dogs, just like humans, as they get older.

JIM BECK VO/OC

As her limp got worse, and every time she stood up, she was having trouble just getting moving.  We knew that it could very well be the best thing to try and euthanize her if it, if it kept getting worse.

MELISSA BECK VO/OC

We tried vitamins.  We tried nutrition.  We tried the Glucosamine for dogs.

FEMALE TRAINER VO

Vets say the number one treatment for all dogs who suffer from arthritis pain is exercise and weight loss.  Traditional approaches include medication, vitamins and supplements.

FEMALE IN RED COAT OC

But many vets across the world are turning to less traditional treatments, like acupuncture.

HOST VO

…he suggested something they had never heard of, something that astounded them, stem cell regenerative therapy.

DR. MIKE HUTCHINSON VO

This is a new tool to veterinarians.  There’s…

DR. MIKE HUTCHINSON OC

DR. MIKE HUTCHINSON VO

HOST VO

The three-hour procedure, which usually costs about…

…2,000 dollars, would take place in Doctor Hutchinson’s office.  A surgical team removes fat tissue from Molly’s body.  Millions of stem cells are then removed from the fat.  The cells are activated, then injected back into the affected area.  Doctor Hutchinson says many dogs appear to be in less pain in a matter of days.

MELISSA BECK VO

I was a little skeptical at first, but it actually…
